Craftsman Flutes

 600x300-images-stories-titles-craftsman

The Craftsman flute is made of two contrasting colors (species) of wood combined in the same instrument. I do not butt glue pieces of wood together on the ends of the flute as you may see with other makers. A butt joining of two end grain pieces of wood does not produce a good strong lasting joint between the different woods. Rather with an Ancient Territories flute the two pieces of wood are cut and glued at a forty five degree angle. Although this is more difficult to do than just butt joining one piece of wood to another it produces greater glue joint surface and thus a stronger connection (joint) between the two woods. It also, coincidentally, creates a more attractive design. The Craftsman flute has a block or totem made of the same two contrasting woods as the flute itself. I call the shape of this block the sound wave.

The Craftsman flute is carefully hand shaped and finished to create and instrument that you will be proud to own. The final finish coat of semi gloss polyurethane varnish is lightly sanded and buffed to remove any imperfections and produce a very smooth surface.

As with all Ancient Territories Native American style flutes the tone holes are positioned so that the player can produce two pentatonic scales and easily cross finger additional notes. If you are looking for something a little out of the ordinary you have found it in the Craftsman flute.

The Grade ‘A’ natural turquoise beads that secure the buckskin band are individually selected for color and shape.

Walnut and Purpleheart Native American Style Flute

Walnut and Purple Heart Love Flute

In this Native American style flute I have combined North American walnut and South American purpleheart. Because the barrel of the flute is made of the medium dense walnut the tonal quality is a bit mellower than some of the denser wood flutes. The flute is also a bit lighter in weight than the purpleheart or bubinga.

Purpleheart and Curly Maple Native American Style Flute

Purpleheart and Curly Maple Native American Wooden Flute

This Indian Love flute is made with a striking combination of woods - creamy white curly maple and deep purpleheart. Because the purpleheart barrel of the flute is a dense hardwood the flute tends to have a slightly brighter, stronger tone.

Zebrawood and Wenge Native American Style Flute

Zebrawood and Wenge Native American Style Wooden Flute

This Native American style flute is made of two strikingly attractive African hardwoods. It is the most popular flute that I make. The tonal quality of a flute made in these two medium dense hardwoods tends to be on the mellow side. The flute is also lighter in weight than the flutes made of denser wood like purpleheart and bubinga. Because zebrawood is so expensive the price is a little higher than the other Craftsman Love flutes.

Curly Maple and Lacewood Native American Style Flute

Curly Maple and Lacewood Wooden Flute

Curly Maple is a medium dense, close-grained North American hardwood with a striking light refractive, striped grain pattern. Lacewood (also called leopardwood) is from Africa and has a very unique lace like grain pattern. The combination makes a striking flute. Curly maple tends to have a slightly mellower tonal quality than the denser wood flutes. This Craftsman Love flute is lighter in weight than bubinga and prupleheart.

Unique Design and Painstaking Detail at a Reasonable Price.

The Craftsman style Love flutes are made from an attractive combination of two different types of wood.

The two species of wood are joined together at a forty-five degree angle. This creates an attractive design statement. It also makes for a more stable glue joint than the butt jointed end caps you see on most other Native American style flutes. The shape of the Craftsman flute is slightly more refined than that of the Backpacker flute.

With the Craftsman flutes more time is devoted to each detail of construction and finish. I try and make this high quality musical instrument available at a reasonable price so that anyone can have a truly beautiful Love flute in their life.
