Musical Meditation and Therapy with the Native American Style Flute

The Human Being as a Musical Instrument

We human beings are a kind of musical instrument. We can sing, hum, whistle and make many other expressive and pleasing sounds. Sound waves are an integral part of the fabric of Creation.

We use words such as harmony, in tune, flow, express, create, commune, entrance, connect, carried away, relax, enjoy, motivate and uplift to describe the musical experience. We use these words because something special happens to us when we express ourselves with musical sounds. Music is part of what makes the human experience so unique.

Entering a Meditative State Through Sound

My personal experience with the Native American style flute has shown me that the act of making music has a profound transformative effect. I find that in making music I enter a meditative state. Playing the flute relaxes me, focuses my attention, quiets the inner dialogue and opens up a connection to a more fundamental state of consciousness.

Playing the Native American style flute is a portal into a transformative experience. It is an opportunity open to anyone to go on a journey to a place without walls, form or preconceptions. It is a place of astounding inner freedom.

You can pick up your flute and begin to play, and your cares begin to fall away. When you stop playing it is as if you have taken a deep breath of fresh air. You are relaxed and renewed. This is what I personally experience, and many people have told me that playing their Native American style flute has the same effect on them.

Meditative Awareness

Brain Waves and Meditative Awareness

The mind in its waking state pulsates with electrical energy at a rate of approximately fourteen beats per second. This is referred to as the Beta wave state. In a meditative or relaxed state, the mind slows to the Alpha wave range of eight to thirteen pulses per second. In deeper meditation the Theta wave state ranges from four to seven pulses per second.

These lower rates of electrical activity are associated with problem solving, setting and attaining goals, and experiencing a profound sense of meditative relaxation. Many people find that playing the Native American style flute gently guides them into this quieter state of awareness.

Some players feel that 432Hz tuning offers a softer and more relaxed quality. You can explore the differences in our 440Hz vs 432Hz guide.

A Simple Path to Relaxation and Renewal

When you are ready there is a flute waiting for you. If your heart is saying yes, why not give it a go. You may find that the simple act of playing a Native American style flute becomes a form of musical meditation and personal renewal.
