Step 1
You should be able to comfortably cover the tone holes with your fingers
If the Native American-style flute is your first musical instrument and you do not feel that you want to challenge yourself, we suggest that you start with a flute in the key of A or G. With an A or G, you will be able to cover the holes comfortably right from the beginning. If your hands are larger or you don’t mind a little initial challenge, an F sharp is not a big step beyond the G.
If you have prior musical experience (with a guitar or piano, for example), you have learned that you can do things with your fingers that at first seem difficult but, with a bit of practice, are definitely doable. In this case, you can play any key of flute that we make. The learning curve may be a little steep at first, but it is not a big deal.
Step 2
Use the chart below to determine the flute length and tone-hole layout for each flute key
The key of a flute is the lowest note that the flute can play.

Step 3
Listen to the sound samples to hear what key appeals to you
Higher-keyed flutes are smaller, more accessible for beginners, and have a brighter, livelier voice. Lower-keyed flutes are longer, sound deeper and more meditative, but are more challenging to learn to play.

Step 4
440Hz or 432Hz tuning: Which is best for you?
Choose 440Hz for playing with other instruments
440Hz is the modern international tuning standard. You need a 440Hz-tuned flute when you want to play with guitars, pianos, or other orchestral instruments.
Choose 432Hz for personal or meditative playing
432Hz is slightly lower in pitch and is often described as warmer, softer, and meditative. In spiritual traditions, it is also commonly described as connected with the Earth’s natural frequency.

Step 5
Choosing the Style of Flute That’s Right for You
This is just me, John Stillwell, talking. I’ve watched a lot of people choose a flute, and I’ve observed a pattern. Someone will see a flute (Collectors, Craftsman, etc.) and be immediately attracted to it. Then, at some point, they will ask the price. If the price is higher than they expected, they sort of recoil and ask if I have something less expensive. My reaction or reply is usually the same: “When was the last time you gave yourself a gift?” That flute they were attracted to is the flute they really want. Every time you pick up your flute, you will remember the gift you gave yourself and be glad you did. Money comes pretty easily to most of us. Your flute will be with you forever.
