Native American Style Flutes

Native American Style Flutes

These flutes have accomplished some quantity of recognition for their distinguishing sound. They are used in an assortment of New Age music soundtracks. The Native American style flute was at first a very private instrument, its music was played without any other musical additions in courtship, healing, meditation, and sacred ceremonies. Today it is played unaccompanied or along with other musical instruments.

A brief history on the Native American style flutes

There are many wonderful tales on how different people came to discover the flute. The woodpecker is just one of the legendary characters; as the woodpecker pecked holes in "hollow branches" while looking for food, the wind would propel around these branches, producing sounds that the people become aware of and wanted to recreate.

Other traditions among the Plains nations held the belief that a tribe could be recognized from far away by the sound and songs that a member of tribe played as they journeyed.

During courtship, a young man would make a flute; position himself off from the rest of his group and play a song that only he and his beloved knew. She would pay attention to this and be aware of his intentions. Once he and his beloved were united together, he would throw the flute away and would never play another flute again.

The sounds from wood

Native American style flutes are made from a variety of woods, for example; Juniper, Redwood, and the most well-liked is Cedar as it gives off a lovely fragrance.

Softwoods are generally preferred by most flute players due to the softer tones that are produced. Other harder woods such as Walnut and Cherry are loved for their lucid, crispiness, and richness of sound that they create.

Besides the drum, the most essential Native American instrument was the flute. The haunting sounds that emanate from these flutes can only be described as, tranquil and deeply spiritual. They have a certain mesmerizing influence; therefore they are immensely popular to have as background music while meditating.

A few of the newer Native American style flutes are called "drone" flutes with two or more flutes put together. In general, the "drone" section plays a set note which the other flute can play alongside in harmonization.

Music from these flutes is mixed together with Western instruments. The sounds of the Native American style flutes can be heard in rock and jazz bands, as well as New Age music.
