Native American Love Flute

Ancient Flutes of yesteryear

Native American flutes were often called "Courting flutes", which clarifies one of their primary purposes. North American Indian tribes also used the flutes to create dance music for their rituals and celebrations.

The tone or pitch of ancient flutes was established by the mass of the tree or branch from which it was prepared along with the essential spacing of the holes. The early flutes were produced from the Juniper family of trees as well as Cedar wood. Today flutes are made from these same woods. Flute music is frequently accompanied by the additional sounds of rattles and drums, the same as it was in ancient times.

Designs and decorations

The Native American love flute is simple to play as it does not have need of any detailed shaping of the mouth to produce a tone. A distinctive position of the early Native American love flute was the upright block.

This upright block position creates two detached chambers. Air leaves the first chamber and is directed into the second chamber through an outer air channel, under the block tied to the top of the flute. These blocks are also known as "birds" or "fetishes" and are often imaginatively designed in the shape of birds, eagles and hawks; or animals such as buffalo, deer and horses. The outer surface of these Native American flutes are commonly painted and decorated with feathers.

A Native American courtship

The flute and the music it creates symbolize something more spiritual than just auditory sound. Native American love flutes are profoundly symbolic; with the tone holes that represent the Earth, the Heavens, life and love - the flute player's breath is believed to give the flute life.

The flute once played an essential role in love and courtship in Native American culture. By tradition, courtship was a communal affair that concerned a girl's family and friends. Before the marriage, families protected their daughters against having a liberated friendship with young men and an inflated coyness among adolescent girls was considered attractive.

Music from Heaven

The sound of the Native American love flute music is absolutely mesmerizing. One can appreciate why a young Native American Indian woman would fall in love with the young suitor, who mastered such beautiful sounds.

The music that emanates from the Native American love flute is deeply poignant, mystical and exceptionally spiritual. It is an honor to own one of these flutes. This is the sort of music you can meditate to, with sounds that will effortlessly send you into a trance-like state.
