There are hundred of different instruments throughout the world and in many cases they look sort of the same everywhere you. The difference is usually the sound that you can make with it and how it is made. Flutes have been around for millennia and the earliest flute that has been discovered so far comes from as far back as thirty to thirty-seven thousand years ago! It is not surprising that the flute has been with humanity for so long since its simple construction and use makes it one of the easiest instruments to play. Today some of these ancient flutes only find a spot on a
flute rack instead of being played like they were meant to be played.
As mentioned before the flute has come a long way and some of these ancient pieces now have their home on a flute rack in a museum somewhere. The earliest flutes were usually made from bone. The bones that was used the most often is the tibia, one of the bones in the leg, that was hollowed out and had holes drilled into it to make the instrument that is quite well known. But that was not the only type of flute that existed in prehistoric times. Archaeologists have found flutes made from the bones of cranes in China and there are many other specimens that are made from wood, bamboo and even human bones that have been discovered all over the world.
It was during the Middle Ages and Renaissance that the flute got its first makeover by humanity. As people were able to make things from different materials so too did they start making flutes from other materials. The flute was originally designed to play along with other instruments, as its soft sound was not considered evocative enough to be on its own in a composition. In the middle 20th century, however, the flute got another makeover as it was introduced to the world of rock and roll and it was thanks to artists like Jethro Tull that the flute became a famous instrument once more. No longer would it be limited to the flute rack!
Today the most common instruments that are known as classified as 'flutes' are the recorder and the flute. Still, there are people who still have a passion for the older instruments that have fallen into obscurity. One such flute are the Native American style flutes that are still sold in many places both for their particular sound and because of their unique beauty.
